Bi-centenary of the arrival of George & Martha Clarke. 3/4 April, 1824
A bi-centenary commemoration was held on 13-14 April, 2024.
On the Saturday, following in the footsteps of George & Martha Clarke, a group of their descendants sailed up the Kerikeri River to the Kerikeri Mission Station, but this time in electric boats, albeit 200 years and 9 days later, due to having to work in with the tides. The group then visited the Kemp House where George and Martha spent their first 9 years. We also visited the Stone Store before moving on to the Marsden Winery for lunch.
Guest-of-honour Suzee Ross cut he Bi-centenary cake before everyone moved on to Te Waimate Mission House, which George Clarke built with the help of local Maori.
A group photo was taken there, although unfortunately Suzee wasn’t present at the time. We then returned by bus to Paihia.
On Sunday we all met at the Treaty Grounds where we had an interesting tour before attending a Maori cultural performance in the Meeting House. The weekend finished off with lunch and our AGM in the Taumarere Function Room.
