Mary Emily Watling Clarke

1867–1941

Mary Emily Watling Clarke was born on 2 August 1867 at Matawhero. 

She married John Mark (born 20 July 1863), and the couple farmed first at Ohauiti and then at Te Matai in 1889. 

They had six children: 

  • Reginald, 
  • Mary Louise, 
  • Rhoda, 
  • John, 
  • Archibald, and 
  • Anne. 

John Mark died at Tauranga on 17 August 1949.

Their son John Mark became a highly regarded surgeon in Tauranga, receiving an OBE in 1962. 

Their daughter Anne Mark (1906–1983) was a distinguished golfer who captained the Commonwealth team to Melbourne in 1962 and eventually received life membership of the Tauranga Golf Club.

Mary died at Selwyn Street, Tauranga, on 19 December 1941.
