George Christopher Clarke was born at Wymondley, Otahuhu, on 27 February 1858, and named George after his paternal grandfather and Christopher after his maternal grandfather's surname. He was baptised at the High Street Congregational Church by Reverend A. MacDonald. He moved to Melbourne, became a Professor of Geology, and was recognised as an eminent scholar in his field. He married Cecile Conroy. He died at Clayton, Melbourne, in August 1935.
