George Arthur Edward Clarke was born in Hobart on 14 February 1865. He farmed the property 'Lottah' at Nubeena on the Tasman Peninsula for his entire working life, with mixed success. After his wife Kate Rumney died in 1931, he was assisted by a couple named Mr and Mrs F. Rodgers. When he died in May 1937, the property passed to his then-unmarried daughters Mary and Patty. His daughter Mary eventually ran it herself before passing it to her niece Alison Waugh Shoobridge, whose family farm it to this day.
George and Kate had five children: Mary (1893–1979), George Henry (1896–1937), Thomas Rumney (1899–1980), Martha 'Patty' (1901–1978), and Katherine Elsie (1904–1955).
