Sarah was born at Waimate on 7 January 1843 — the child who, more than any other, reminds us that pioneer life in the Bay of Islands was not always vigorous and romantic. Her health was fragile from childhood. She spent long periods at the house George had built on the Kerikeri River, where the coastal air was kinder on her lungs. She was educated in Hobart. She lived at Grove Cottage with her parents in their old age, and stayed on after her father died in 1875 and her mother in 1882, sharing the house with her sister Martha. She died at Waimate on 25 July 1902.
