John Betts Clarke

1840-00-00, Waimate North to 1916-10-01, Waimate North

Baptized 8 August 1840.

George Clarke, after returning from Auckland with his family, John, Marsden, Martha, Sarah and Henrietta, grew up at Grove Cottage. John was appointed People's Warden at Waimate in 1872. (ER) In 1868 He and Marsden farmed the Grove Cottage land.

John became sole owner and occupier of Grove Cottage land, somewhere after Marsdens death in 1889. He supplied Kauri for the Kauri for the first A&P show held at Grove Cottage in 1888. In 1872, John was appointed Peoples Warden. In 1899, married Emily Wyatt Watling, born 1835, a widow of Dr Wyatt Watling who died 1896. John and Emily apparently lived for a period at least in the home of her brother, Major Watling, in the mission house at Waimate North, first built by George Clarke.

Frances and Mary Clarke (children of Marsden Clarke) apparently spent a time with them, there and again. Uncle John and Aunt Emily in particular were regarded by these two girls as very straight-laced. John and Emily went and lived for a period of time at Akarana in an Old Hotel, a short distance from the Grove cottage property. Grove cottage was rented out to Rev. Philip Walsh, Archdeacon of Waimate from 1902 until his death in 1914.

John died 1October 1916. Emily Died 27 November 1917.
